ADHD Pathway

The ADHD pathway aims to streamline the diagnosis and treatment for those suffering from ADHD.

Step 1 - Make a referral/booking

Contact us to make a referral at refer@psychiatry.nz. We then will send you information on how to make a booking and/or being on our waitlist.

Step 2 - Register

Complete our Intake form to register at psychiatry.nz. Remember to tick ADHD (New assessment) when asked for the reason of assessment.

Step 3 - Information gathering

After you have completed the intake form, we will send you the ADHD questionairres to complete. Please also send through school reports, GP referrals and any relevant psychiatric/psychological reports to refer@psychiatry.nz if available.

Step 4 - Psychiatrist assessment

Attend the initial assessment with our psychiatrist. Most people only require one assessment. A follow up assessment may be required in complex cases (additional charges apply).

Step 5 - Outcome

If you fulfill criteria for ADHD, our psychiatrist will then:

  • Apply for special authority for medications if appropriate
  • Provide instructions to your GP on how to manage your medications
  • Provide general advice on how to manage ADHD and other mental illness in your day to day life
  • Provide a letter to you summarising the assessment and treatment plan, which you may share with your GP

Please note:

  • An assessment for ADHD does not guarantee a diagnosis of ADHD.
  • Subsidised medications are only available to those eligible for publicly funded health care. Click here for more details
  • We do not provide prescriptions for medications unless in special circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need a GP referral?
We do prefer GP referrals or at least the GP being aware of the referral. This is because the GP will be the one providing ongoing monitoring and prescribing medications. There are some cases that we do prescribe the medications but this will require follow up appointments with us.
  • Are you affiliated with insurance providers?
We are not affiliated with insurance providers. If you have an insurance provider, what usually what happens is that clients pay us first and submit the claim to their insurance provider. It might be worth getting a pre-approval from your insurance provider for confirmation.
  • How does the waitlist work?
When you are on our waitlist, we will notify you when we release appointment slots. Those who have been on our waitlist the longest will get notified earlier. Once a group has been notified, we usually give them 1-3 days to respond before we send out notifications to the subsequent group.
  • What if I am unable to get school reports or others to complete the childhood questionairres for the ADHD assessment?
We understand when people are unable to get school reports or find appropriate people to complete the questionairres. In the absence of collateral information, it is acceptable for you to provide the history around schooling/childhood yourself.
